For reasons unknown to Keagan, the Flannagan family suddenly moves to Springfield, Missouri, taking her with them. One day, Keagan is told that she is in danger and must leave the Flanagan home immediately. What follows is the disappearance of the Flannagan family and the evolving relationship between Keegan and a young protestant man. When the United States enters the war and the scourge of the influenza pandemic of 1918 envelops the city, Keagan struggles to maintain her sense of happiness and hope in a home she has learned to love.
